Kampung Baru means "New Village". This Malay village was allowed for the Malay community from a different sect of Malays to settle down. They were initially only allowed to live and cultivate 'padi' growing and other agricultural crops to meet the need of Kuala Lumpur food supply in the 1900s. Later it was found that the soil was not good enough to grow Padi / rice hence the Malays settled down. This more than 100 years old Malay traditional village wonderfully located in the midst of busy Kuala Lumpur city gives a great view of the contrast between modern city vs traditional village
