The Kinabatangan River, Sabah’s longest river, is one of the most exiting and accessible places to explore the rich biodiversity of Sabah, Borneo. The river offers an incredible opportunity to see large range if wildlife including Borneo’s unique Proboscis Monkey, the Orang Utan, Bornean Pygmy Elephant, crocodiles, otters and countless rare and beautiful birds. All the eight species of hornbill found in Borneo make the area their home. The inhabitants of the Kinabatangan region are mostly Orang Sungai of mixed ancestry including Suluk, Bugis, Brunei, Bajaus and Chinese. A trip up the Kinabatangan River Cruise at dawn or dusk is the best opportunity to see the all the wildlife at here.

Why this trip?

Cruises can be conducted along the river and around the oxbow lake, in search of wildlife such as elephants, primates and different bird species. Bird watches will be amazed and impressed by the rich variety of birdlife here. It is possible to spot water birds such as white egrets, the rare Storm’s Stork, the black crowned Night Heron, the endangered Oriental Darter, several species of kingfisher and many more.

Things to prepare for the trip

Raincoat, cap/hat, insect repellent, sun cream, good walking shoes, socks, (leech socks are available for sale), a pair of sandals, torch light, comfortable cotton T-shirt with long or short pant, binocular, camera, personal toiletries and medications.
